Karadar Classical Music World - Field, John

The Irish composer and pianist John Field has been credited with the invention of the nocturne, a form later explored by Chopin.

The son of a violinist, Field studied in Dublin with Giordani and was then apprenticed to Muzio Clementi, when his family moved to London in 1793.

Clementi took him to France, Germany and Russia in order to demonstrate his pianos.

After appearing in a number of London concerts and touring widely, he settled in Russia, in1803, where he became a fashionable performer and teacher.

Illness brought him to London again in 1831. This visit was followed by a continental tour after which he returned to Moscow where he died in 1837.

Works	Although Field wrote seven piano concertos and a number of chamber compositions for piano and strings, his chief claim to fame lies in his more than eighteen nocturnes.
